Also, as was the case when previously featured, QCOM continues to trade close to a 52-week high. Wall Street forecasts are also higher now. Current earnings estimates of $1.95 per share for the year ending September 2008 are last month's $1.91.

The company posted a strong fiscal third quarter, noting that it delivered record revenues that were up by 19 % year-over-year. QCOM's third-quarter (GAAP) net income also increased year-over-year.

The Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy) company continues to offer a ROE of 20%, squashing the industry average of 2%. Its yield of 1.2% stands out as the company operates in an industry that virtually pays no dividend. QCOM's earnings per share are expected to grow by 19% over the next 3 - 5 years, versus the industry average of 17%. Read our Jul 10, 2008 analysis.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Closing Bell: Profit taking inside a tornado

Filed under: Microsoft (MSFT), Amazon.com (AMZN), Sirius Satellite Radio (SIRI), Federal Natl Mtge (FNM), QUALCOMM Inc (QCOM), Level 3 Communications (LVLT)
If you were getting used to the bulls running the show, the bears whispers of "Remember us?" turned much louder today. If you were looking for the day we finally got profit taking after a monster rise in financial stocks, it came. Weak housing data was said to be one of the key issues for the market, but the more than 400,000 weekly jobless claims filed was much worse than expected. Oil didn't skyrocket but it did at least catch a bid today and oil was back up to over $125.00 per barrel late in the day. If you want a big figure, PIMCO's Bill Gross said that total financial writedowns could see $1 Trillion.

Here are today's unofficial closing bell levels:
DJIA 11354.49 (-277.89)
S&P500 1253.12 (-29.07)
NASDAQ 2280.11 (-45.77)
10YR T-NOTE 4.016% (-0.132%)
52-WEEK LOWS
TOP ANALYST UPGRADES
TOP ANALYST DOWNGRADES

Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) saw a mega-surge after the market decided that its above estimate earnings and somewhat conservative guidance was to match the environment rather than to be any red flag. It beat earnings and gave a slightly better outlook on free cash flow for the year. It looks like this one is set to become a leveraged sentiment proxy based upon the market trends of the day, and here's an explanation for that. Its online unit's president leaving to go run Juniper was a definite drag and timed very strangely for the company.
According to The Wall Street Journal, "Under the settlement, Nokia will withdraw that complaint as well as other litigation. Besides getting licenses to Qualcomm patents, Nokia said it will assign ownership of a number of its patents to Qualcomm. The pact not only covers patents used in current cellphone networks but also emerging technologies that could succeed them -- including WiMax and LTE, which stands for long-term evolution."

The news sent Qualcomm's stock up over 18%.

Nokia had disputed the fees Qualcomm charged for its chips and the license fees for its technology. Qualcomm can now get substantial payments from its former nemesis. If Qualcomm had lost its battle, its long-term income could have been cut sharply. Nokia is getting access to patents, but it will still be making payments to the chip company.

The trouble has kept Qualcomm's shares from trading above the $52 level that they hit in mid-2006. Investors can expect that the ceiling on the stock will now be gone.

While the S&P 500 showed weakness ahead of housing data to be released at 10:00 a.m. EDT, the Nasdaq composite was slightly positive after Amazon.com reported strong earnings Wednesday. Investors also braced for Ford's earnings, which indeed posted double the estimated loss. The earnings wave continues. Meanwhile, oil prices edged a little higher, but remained around $124 a barrel.

Starting with Ford (NYSE: F) then, the world's third largest automaker posted (after items) a loss of $1.38 billion, or 62 cents. Analysts surveyed by Bloomberg expected Ford to report a loss of 28 cents a share. The headlines scream of a loss of $8.7 billion though, which includes $8 billion in pretax writedowns of North American plants and assets of Ford Motor Credit Co. Ford also said it will convert three truck factories to produce small cars as rising gasoline prices sap U.S. truck sales.

Dow Chemical (NYSE: DOW) couldn't manage to offset higher costs of energy and raw materials with the recent price increases it announced, and posted a 27% decrease in profit for the period. Net income was $762 million, or 81 cents a share. Revenue is up 23% to $16.38 billion. Earnings were below analyst expectation according to Thomson Financial of 85 cents per share, but better than the sales estimates of $14.9 billion. DOW shares are dropping some 9.5% in premarket trading as the company said it expects the economy to weaken.

Amazon.com Inc. Not only did it beat estimates -- with a 41% climb in revenue to $4.06 billion compared to $3.96 expected, and EPS of 37 cents compared to expectations of 26 cents -- but it also raised its full-year revenue projections. Here's his bullish assessment from The DRIP Investor newsletter.

"Yes, the market is declining. And, yes, it is often scary to buy during such market periods. Nevertheless, there's an adage that 'the best time to invest was yesterday; the next best time is today'.

"Indeed, countless studies have shown that the best thing any investor can do is invest early and often. That is the best way to maximize the power of time, and time will have the greatest bearing on your investment results.

"Thus, investors need to be willing to buy even when it is difficult to do so, or should I so especially when it is difficult to do so. The reason is that we usually are reluctant to buy stocks during market declines. Yet, if you think about it, declining markets should be precisely the time we buy since stocks are cheaper.

"The stock has demonstrated impressive price performance throughout the market volatility in recent months, rising to its highest level in a year above $50 before pulling back.

"The company generates 90% of its revenue from cell-phone chipsets and license royalties paid by users of its intellectual property. The firm has been embroiled in litigation with Nokia over royalties, although some clarity on this front should occur toward the end of this year.

"The company recently raised its earnings guidance for the June quarter to an adjusted income of $0.54 cents to $0.55 cents per share, up from previous guidance of $0.50 cents to $0.52 cents per share.

"Earnings estimates for fiscal 2008 ending in September have risen in the last 90 days and now stand at $2.14 per share. For fiscal 2009, Wall Street is looking for 13% growth in per-share earnings to $2.43. Both estimates could prove conservative, especially with a favorable resolution to the Nokia situation.

"I think these shares could touch $60 over the next 12 months. The stock pays a quarterly dividend of $0.16 per share, giving the stock a yield of 1.3%."

The firm supplies integrated circuits and system software for voice and data communications, multimedia devices and global positioning products. It also licenses CDMA semiconductor technology and software to more than 100 other equipment and cell phone makers. The Qualcomm Ventures unit invests in wireless communications and Internet startups. Major competitors include Nokia (NYSE: NOK) and Texas Instruments (NYSE: TXN).

The company pleased investors last week, when it guided fiscal Q3 EPS to 54-55 cents (50-52 cents prior, 52 cent consensus) and Q3 revenues to points slightly above $2.7 billion ($2.5-$2.7B prior, $2.61B consensus). Management also guided FY08 EPS to $2.09-$2.13 ($2.04-$2.09 prior, $2.11 consensus). The updated guidance reflected greater than expected demand for Qualcomm's 1xEV-DO and HSPA chipsets, as well as revenues from advanced 3G network upgrades. Jefferies subsequently reiterated its "buy" rating on the shares and boosted its price target to $54.

QCOM shares popped into a bullish "pennant" consolidation pattern on the news. Prices frequently exit pennants moving in the same direction they were traveling on entry. In this case, that would be to the upside.

Brokers recommend the issue with seven "strong buys", fourteen "buys" and three "holds". Analysts see a 17% average annual growth rate, through the next five years. The QCOM Price to Free Cash Flow ratio (29.26), Sales Growth rate (17.51%), EPS Growth rate (22.73%), Operating Margin (32.34%), Net Profit Margin (35.78%), Return on Assets (19.56%), Return on Investment (21.96%), Return on Equity (22.70%) and Net Income per Employee ($270.55k) compare favorably with industry, sector and S&P 500 averages. Institutions own about 77% of the outstanding shares. The stock is one of those used to calculate the S&P 500 Index. Over the past 52 weeks, it has traded between $35.17 and $50.18. A stop-loss of $42.90 looks good here. Note that the firm is expected to report Q3 results in late July.

In The DRIP Investor, he explains, "The stock has been stuck in a trading range for the last four years. But that looks like it is about to end, as it recently moved to a new 52-week high and is setting its sites on its 2006 high of $53."

"Strong earnings and greater visibility on some litigation matters should pave the way for solid gains in the second half of 2008. Technology stocks should remain among the market's leading sectors, and Qualcomm offers an excellent play in the group.

"Qualcomm generates 90% of its revenue from cell-phone chipsets and license royalties paid by users of its intellectual property. Qualcomm's chips are used in mobile phones and wireless infrastructures around the globe.

"Growth here should remain strong as networks convert to third-generation technology and emerging markets expand and upgrade their infrastructure.

"The company's most profitable segment is intellectual-property licensing. Qualcomm has had some uncertainty in this area as a result of a feud with Nokia. Legal disputes with Nokia stem from Nokia's shipping handsets without paying royalties.

"The good news is that the two companies have agreed to consolidate a host of lawsuits into one case to be heard later this year. Hopefully a decision by year-end will lift some of the clouds that have hung over these shares.

"Despite the Nokia issues, Qualcomm has continued to put up good growth numbers. Per-share earnings excluding special items and stock-based compensation rose 23% in fiscal 2007 ended in September and 14% in the six months ended March 31.

"For fiscal 2008, the consensus earnings estimate shows 5% growth, a rather modest earnings target for the company. The company currently pays a quarterly dividend of $0.16 per share. The stock's current yield is 1.4%.

"At 22 times the fiscal 2008 earnings estimate of $2.11 per share, these shares are not cheap. However, that multiple is significantly lower than Qualcomm's historical P-E ratio. Investors willing to endure above-average price volatility should buy these shares now.

"The stock has the potential to put on significant gains with a resolution in the Nokia issue. I own these shares in a non-DRIP account and would recommend them for DRIP and non-DRIP investors alike. The company's DRIP permits initial purchase directly. Minimum initial investment is $500."

So, big chip companies like Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) need to figure out where to get their next spurt of growth. Smartphones and other "intelligent" wireless devices sales are rising fast, so why not take a piece of that market. One reason is probably competition, but that rarely keeps companies from entering a market that they think is promising.

According to The Wall Street Journal, "Intel Corp has been heavily promoting a new breed of pocket-size portable devices as a future market for its chips. Its competitors now hope to reap the benefits." Texas Instruments (NYSE: TXN) and Qualcomm (NASDAQ: QCOM) already dominate the mobile market and may not want to let Intel in. Other large chips companies like Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) and AMD (NYSE: AMD) would like a piece of the pie as well.

The gamble by Intel is that there will be huge demand for devices that are smaller than a PC but larger than a smartphone. They will eventually run on WiMax, WiFi and standard cellular broadband networks. The industry calls these "mobile Internet devices."

The success of the new market may swing on one large miscalculation. Consumers may not want a one-pound mini-computer with a tiny keyboard and modest-sized screen. Smartphones like the Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPhone and RIM (NASDAQ: RIMM) BlackBerry are already advanced "computers" and they are being improved every year.

The editor of Dow Theory Forecasts explains, "Though the court case may distract investors, Qualcomm's long-term fundamentals appear solid." Here's his bullish outlook.

"The company is embroiled in disputes over royalty fees paid for use of its patents, particularly by one of its largest customers, Nokia. In March, the combatants agreed to consolidate a host of lawsuits into one case to be heard later this year and likely to be decided by year's end.

"Barring a disastrous court loss, which seems unlikely, Qualcomm shares should benefit. Any resolution will reduce uncertainty. By the end of this year, Qualcomm should be able to jettison some of the baggage holding back its stock.

"While the U.S. economic slowdown has sparked fears of a decline in demand for microchips, Qualcomm should benefit as cell-phone users worldwide transition to third-generation technology, which allows for faster downloading of video, music and other data.

"Qualcomm sells its microchips for use in mobile phones and wireless infrastructure around the globe. Demand for higher-functioning cell phones remains strong, as subscribers upgrade phones and carriers increase sales of third-generation products.

"While customers adopt third-generation wireless technology, Qualcomm is already preparing a portfolio of fourth-generation technology slated for release from 2011 to 2015.

"Meanwhile, through the distractions, Qualcomm has continued to post solid earnings growth. Per-share earnings excluding special items and stock-based compensation rose 23% in fiscal 2007 ended September and 14% in the six months ended March.

"Consensus estimates project growth in per-share earnings of 5% in fiscal 2008 ending September and 14% in fiscal 2009. Costs have risen sharply in recent quarters, but the company still seems capable of topping Wall Street's expectations.

"Qualcomm shares have risen 11% this year, compared to a 5% decline in the S&P 500 Index. At 20 times the per-share earnings of $2.21 expected over the next year, Qualcomm trades below its five-year average forward P/E ratio of 24."

And I thought Ballmer said he would lower the bid ... Don't they know by now these negotiating tactics are well known? In any event, it's starting to look more and more like the deal is closer than ever and the parties are willing, despite each showing off some muscle first.

Starbucks (NASDAQ: SBUX) reported late Wednesday a 28% drop in second-quarter earnings to $108.7 million, matching market expectations. While the drop was expected, it doesn't mean the report showed any positive changes following Schultz coming back to the CEO role.
